Beyond what we call rationality and irrationality.gary N.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13785000857977613578noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36273873.post-66450195174782172942011-11-26T00:00:48.070-05:002011-11-26T00:00:48.070-05:00Saw Motian for the first time in the last year of ...Saw Motian for the first time in the last year of the original lineup of the Paul Motian Trio at the Village Vanguard. Their album from the 80s, "Live in Japan", was critical in my college years for navigating concepts like "in", "out" and "texture". By the time I saw the band, I had def made my peace with most of that stuff but was still interested in seeing Frisell, since I'm always down to hear and learn more about rich guitar tone. But the surprise takeaway from that show was watching Motian play some straight up strange stuff. And strange in the best way. Like, "What kind of time is this? Is this swing?" Is he fucking with everybody right now or is this actually how he plays?" None of the records I had heard with him featured Motian playing like this: going so far out in a wholly original, non "avant garde jazz" way while still implying time/propulsion.

I saw Stanley Crouch after the show and I introduced myself, just out of respect, (brotha to brotha). He said "You wanna meet the band?" I said sure, and he first introduced me to Lovano, who was very friendly. Next was Motian, who we caught in the back hall. He still had his sunglasses on. I told him something generic but highly complimentary and put out my hand. He looked at me and said "Yeah, I don't shake hands". It was kinda perfect.evanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12607614651261832762noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36273873.post-24145853989542597272011-11-23T11:03:05.910-05:002011-11-23T11:03:05.910-05:00Beautifully written Hank. I can't think of another musician who even comes close to the moods he could set.zebtronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10921487072284969291noreply@blogger.com
