"Sunless Saturday" has more of a bounce to it, but remains heavy. And the ending is really out of nowhere but totally works, almost evoking a Roxy Music faux classicism. "Servitude" and the "Give a Monkey a Brain..." record was part of their narrowing of genre period. "Sunless..." is from the previous record, "The Reality of My Surroundings", which to me is the pinnacle of their metal/funk/ska/genre hybrid/hopping weirdness period. Kendall Jones (former lead guitarist) has some fantastic solos on that record.

Nice choice for the King's X though. One of their best for sure. Also check out "Over My Head", "Dogman" and "It's Love".evanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12607614651261832762noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36273873.post-59464436993921257002011-07-09T18:22:23.229-04:002011-07-09T18:22:23.229-04:00Nice to see you mention Fishbone. Here they are performing it on SNL in 1991:

http://www.musickhead.com/2011/02/in-performance-sunless-saturday.htmldrew knoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36273873.post-81452761048962064642011-07-08T17:51:48.813-04:002011-07-08T17:51:48.813-04:00I also wore big pants. Hank, you know what a Soundgarden junkie I am and, man, “Down Rodeo” was a good Rage call that I mightn’t have considered. “Milquetoast” was my intro to Helmet, via The Crow soundtrack (which is maybe its own “dark big pants” comp) and still my favorite song of theirs.

Fishbone: yep (I never listened to them much, but they’re on the list now)
Tool: yep (hate everything they did post-Aenima, though)
Quicksand: yep
Voivod: wow that’s weird, but I kinda like it. nope, really like it. so weird, though.

I think Hum could exist on a fringe of this web and Faith No More.

Mind Over Four song wasn’t bad

Anacrusis caught my attention, not sure I’d even heard of them before.Alex C.http://avianarchitext.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36273873.post-74775637089694282202011-07-07T20:06:15.023-04:002011-07-07T20:06:15.023-04:00wow, it appears there is a lot of overlap in what ...wow, it appears there is a lot of overlap in what I listened to at the time to what you listed. did not know that I'd run into someone who actually had Anacrusis and Mind Over Four tapes. Also, my favorite Soundgarden song is "face pollution" and I agree that The Art of Rebellion is an underrated album.

I totally get what sound you are talking about... it's sort of the spirit of the 90's itself.gbowleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08609129500028977757noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36273873.post-25677417107589398622011-07-07T12:30:49.825-04:002011-07-07T12:30:49.825-04:00Coincidentally, I just ripped my whole Suicidal Te...Coincidentally, I just ripped my whole Suicidal Tendencies collection to my iTunes library last night before reading this article (The Art of Rebellion included, which is probably their last solid album).

One thing I'd like to add to this discussion are the prog-grunge collaborations/offshoot bands that played a big part of the overall scene. Examples might include Mad Season, Magnificent Bastards and Temple of the Dog (among others).Philhttp://brutalprog.comnoreply@blogger.com
